Andy Freeberg

Andy Freeberg
Andy Freeberg was born in the United States in New York City. He went to school at the University of Michigan and was a photo editor for a local newspaper in Michigan. After that, he moved back to New York and grew in popularity, working for companies like The Rolling Stone, Time, and other famous outlets. A lot of his photographs include a subject posed in a museum(andyfreeberg.com).
BOMB Magazine | Andy Freeberg    The first photograph of Freebergs I am choosing to discuss is this one. I think his whole concept of including people with art pieces to create completely new art pieces is really interesting and something that you don't see very often. I like this piece specifically because this elderly woman is posed between two statues with very interesting juxtaposition. One is showing this powerful ruler, while the other shows a man standing. I also think it's interesting that he chose to use a woman to put in between the two men because it makes the audience wonder what message he is possibly trying to convey. Guardians - Photographs by Andy Freeberg | LensCultureThe second photo I am choosing to talk about is this one. It has the same concept and composition as the first one. I love how the artwork has women sitting down in a specific way, and he had his subject match the poses in the painting. This kind of reminds me of Night at the Museum and how the people in the movie interacted with the statues and exhibits. I also like how he chose someone who is dressed sort of similarly to the women in the artwork, modestly with a long skirt, etc. This piece also pulls me in because it looks like they are all holding contact with the photographer or audience.     Overall, I think this series or type of photography is really interesting, and I think it's cool that he makes it enticing, even if it's just a subject sitting beside a statue or art piece. I think it's a creative take on repurposing old artwork in a new way, and it causes the audience to think about the locations in a way that they maybe didn't think about before.
