The first picture I am choosing to discuss is this one. I love how well he captured the natural lighting of this photograph. I think the light coming from behind the two rocks (which are clearly the main subjects) really just emphasizes that further. I also love the strong contrast of this photograph with the foreground, middle ground, and background. I think these deep darks and lights really pull the audience into the photo more. I also appreciate the slight triangulation going on in this photograph with the different rocks present.
The second photo I am choosing to discuss is this one. Although the photo has a lot of grey, I don’t think it loses its readability at all. I love how the only thing in the photo is the book open, but Vogt takes it a step further and crumples up all of the pages open in the book. Doing something like this in a still life really causes the audience to wonder what the artist intended when they make their choices, especially because it’s easy to see that this was intentional.
Overall I thought Vogt’s work was very interesting. When I looked at his website there were some series that I found really interesting and well done while there were others that I thought an amateur photographer could have done, but perhaps I didn’t understand them fully.
