Annie Leibovitz Annie Leibovitz was born on October 2, 1949. She is an american photographer who was born in Connecticut. She is most well-known for her portraiture which was usually of celebrities. She attended the San Fransisco Art Institute, although she studied painting there. She didn’t change her major until later in her education (Wikipedia). The first picture I’m choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I really like about this photograph is the compositional organization of it. When people take portraits, they usually include all of the person’s head and maybe shoulders or their entire body. I really like how this portrait doesn’t have the whole head of the subject. I think the focus is the eyes so I think it was a good artistic call to not include the rest of her head because it’s not necessary. The second photograph I am choosing to discuss is this one. I really like the idea behind this photo. The background of the small kitchen with small furniture is reall...

Robert Mapplethorpe Robert Mapplethorpe was an American born on March 9th, 1989. He studied Fine Arts at Pratt Institute in New York where he focused on graphic design, but dropped out before he was able to finish his degree. He was most well-known for his black and white photography and his self portrait series (wikipedia). The first image I am choosing to look at is this one. One thing I really like about this photograph is the extreme contrast. The black background behind the very light face is very compositionally interesting. Another thing I really like about this photography is the long exposure that he used. The blur of the face as he looks to the right and then more forward really creates a sense of movement. I also know from experience how hard it is to work with long exposure so this is even more impressive to me since I’ve struggled with it before. The other photograph I am choosing to talk about is this one. Once again, I feel like Map...

Fred Ritchin: After Photography One thing that was said in the article that I thought was really interesting was “Much of digital photography will not be, as it is now, reactive but rather try to anticipate and deal with potential issues rather than waiting for them to happen and recording their existence.” I don't really like this idea because photography is all about seeing moments as they happen and capturing them. Candid photographs are one of my favorite things because they aren't planned and they're not posed. They are simply the art of capturing people in their everyday lives but capturing them in a way that makes them extraordinary. So the idea that photographs will be more of a pre-reaction is not that appealing to me as a photographer. Another quote that I found really interesting was “Photography, rather than reacting to an apocalypse, can now try to help us avoid them.” I think this is a really good point for the author to bring up. Photographs are really real...
