Annie Leibovitz
Annie Leibovitz was born on October 2, 1949. She is an american photographer who was born in Connecticut. She is most well-known for her portraiture which was usually of celebrities. She attended the San Fransisco Art Institute, although she studied painting there. She didn’t change her major until later in her education (Wikipedia).
The first picture I’m choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I really like about this photograph is the compositional organization of it. When people take portraits, they usually include all of the person’s head and maybe shoulders or their entire body. I really like how this portrait doesn’t have the whole head of the subject. I think the focus is the eyes so I think it was a good artistic call to not include the rest of her head because it’s not necessary.
The second photograph I am choosing to discuss is this one. I really like the idea behind this photo. The background of the small kitchen with small furniture is really unique. I also really think the pose of the subject works well because it makes her seem kind of squished in the photo which is what the photographer was attempting to do. I kind of wish her dress was a different color because I just think it’s a little distracting and doesn’t really match the background well.
Overall I really think Leibovitz is great at portrait photography. It definitely is not an easy medium but her focus on composition is really obvious. She is able to convey messages really well which I think is really impressive
