Ralph Gibson Ralph Gibson is an American photographer who was born in Los Angeles, California. He was born in 1939. He is most well-known for his photographic books. His photos are usually a little eerie and mysterious. Gibson studied art at the San Fransisco Art Institute from 1960-1962. Before that, he was in the United States Navy (Wikipedia). The first photo I am choosing to talk about is this one. I really enjoy the sort of eerieness of this photo. Not only is the contrast very good but the style of the photo itself is beautiful. I love how you can only see a portion of the girl’s face. I also like the intentional decision to have her eye as the only feature you can fully see. I also really like how Gibson has the shadow of someone else’s face on top of hers in the photo, covering the other half of her facial features. I just really appreciate this photo because you can tell it was well thought out and had to be precisely executed. This is the second photo I am choosing ...

Michael Kenna Michael Kenna is a British photographer born in 1953 and still living. He was born in Widnes England and left seminary school at the age of 17 to pursue photography elsewhere. Kenna is most well known for his nature landscapes in black and white. He has claimed to draw inspiration from two main places, Japanese landscapes, and Bill Brandt, another British photographer. Kenna is also well known for his images taken at night that utilize long exposures. (Jackson Fine Art) The first image I am choosing to talk about is this one. I really appreciate his light-to-dark balance in this photograph. I also love the angle of this photo because I've tried to take photos like this before and they never turn out good for me and I feel like this one is really pretty. Another thing I really like about this photo is how some of the trees are a lighter grey and some are completely black. I just think the contrast is really good. Additionally, I know how hard it would be to take...

Lee Friedlander      Lee Friedlander was a photographer born in 1934 in Washington. He was interested in photography from a young age and then went on to study at an art school in Los Angeles, California. His work follows the “documentary style” of photography and he is also considered by many to be a street photographer. We studied his work as an example this week when we looked at reflections in photographs. Friedlander is very well known for his ability to connect with the space around him in his photos. (ICP,  1999) The first piece I am choosing to look at by Lee Friedlander is one of his pieces that focus on reflections. This piece was photographed in New Orleans. One thing I really like about this is how much it reminds me of modern-day social media. On Instagram and Snapchat, people are always taking pictures like this in front of mirrors and I just think it's funny how this was taken a long time ago before social media was a thing but it looks exactly...
