John Fobes

Image
For my final blog, I chose to discuss John Fobes. I explored lumen prints and produce by placing slices of fruits and vegetables on my paper and then exposing them. This created different patterns and new abstractions from the fruits. Fobes did very similar work. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and is well known for his nature-focused lumen prints. The first piece by Fobes I am choosing to discuss is these 3 pears. One thing I really like about this piece is the readability of the fruit. When I was doing my final project, I noticed that some of my fruits lost readability in the exposure, which made my trial-and-error process slightly more difficult. Because of this, I am really impressed with the way Fobes’ images came out, making me wonder if he used actual fruits or produced images of them in a different way. Another thing I really like about this piece is the bright colors of the fruit. I wondered if mine would react with the paper to produce different colors, but I didn't ...

Anne Arden McDonald

Image
Anne Arden McDonald is an American photographer who was born in 1966 in Georgia. She started photographing very young and continued that for over 15 years, specializing in self-portraits in abandoned buildings and spaces. She has also experimented quite a bit in lumen printing, and using different chemicals on photo papers, then exposing them to sunlight to develop them. She has had her work shown in many galleries, the Brooklyn Museum, the Houston MFA, and more. The first work by McDonald I am choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I really like about this piece is the colors produced, especially the blues and purples that come through. I am assuming this is the print before it got mixed because I think those colors would probably not be as vibrant after going through the fixing procedure. I also love how organic the shape is of her print is and how it’s all the same organic circle shapes. This print reminds me a lot of like a water puddle of like bubbles coming to the ...

Christian Marclay

Christian Marclay was born in California in 1955, but grew up in Switzerland. He worked in many different fields including noise art, painting, photography, and video arts. He studied at multiple institutes including the Massachutets College of Art and Design. He created multiple songs and had well known works including Record WIthout a Cover, The Clock, and more. (wikipedia)     The first piece I am choosing to talk about is this one. It appears to be cassette tape film draped across a paper with some cassettes at the bottom. The piece gives off a very fun and spunky vibe. The tapes coming down the page remind me of streamers throw at a party or toilet paper being thrown at someones house. I also love how theres an everymely dark blue and a white and not really any other depth. The other piece I am choosing to talk about is this one, which I feel like fits really well with the other piece. I appreciate how this piece is much more organized while the other is a lit...

Pierre Cordier

Image
Pierre Cordier was a Belgian artist born in 1933. He loved Jazz when he was younger, but started his photography endeavors after meeting a friend and photographing him. He then started dabbling in what would later be known as chemigrams. He discovered this after writing on photographic paper with nail polish then later realized that using different “resist materials” created different effects on his papers. He later went on to produce art that was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art. (wikipedia) The first piece I chose to talk about is this one. One thing I like about this piece is the repetitiveness of the lines in the piece. I also think it's extremely impressive how there are barely any imperfections in this piece, especially since I did chemigrams, and I know how uncertain the process is and how quickly things can change. I imagine this probably took a very long amount of time and attempts to perfect this project. The second piece I am choosing to talk about is this one. ...

Christian Vogt

Image
Christian Vogt Christian Vogt is a Swiss photographer who was born in 1946. Vogt has won many different awards and publications for his work including Art Directors Awards from Switzerland, Germany, New York, and Los Angeles, Swiss National Scholarships, and more. Vogts work spans over multiple genres including portrait photography, landscape photography, and other types of photography (christianvogt.com). The first picture I am choosing to discuss is this one. I love how well he captured the natural lighting of this photograph. I think the light coming from behind the two rocks (which are clearly the main subjects) really just emphasizes that further. I also love the strong contrast of this photograph with the foreground, middle ground, and background. I think these deep darks and lights really pull the audience into the photo more. I also appreciate the slight triangulation going on in this photograph with the different rocks present. The second photo I am choosing to disc...

Andy Freeberg

Image
Andy Freeberg           Andy Freeberg was born in the United States in New York City. He went to school at the University of Michigan and was a photo editor for a local newspaper in Michigan. After that, he moved back to New York and grew in popularity, working for companies like The Rolling Stone, Time, and other famous outlets. A lot of his photographs include a subject posed in a museum(andyfreeberg.com).     The first photograph of Freebergs I am choosing to discuss is this one. I think his whole concept of including people with art pieces to create completely new art pieces is really interesting and something that you don't see very often. I like this piece specifically because this elderly woman is posed between two statues with very interesting juxtaposition. One is showing this powerful ruler, while the other shows a man standing. I also think it's interesting that he chose to use a woman to put in between the two men because it makes the ...

Irving Penn

Image
Irving Penn Irving Penn is an American photographer who was born in New Jersey in 1917. He was most well known for his portraits and fashion photography and worked at many places including Vogue. He studied graphic design in high school and then went on to study at what is now the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He studied drawing, painting, graphic design, and more. He really stepped into the photography world after working at Vogue for a few years and being asked to do some shoots for them (Wikipedia).    The first portrait I am choosing to talk about by Irving Penn is this one. One thing Penn really mastered in his time as a photographer was his ability to pose his subjects in a way that really captivated the attention of the audience. This picture specifically I think is posed really interestingly and the hand positions of this subject really cause me to focus on her face. Not only do they act as an outline to her face in a way by cupping it but additional...
