Abelardo Morell Abelardo Morell was born in Havana, Cuba in 1948. He went to Bowdoin College to receive a bachelor of arts and received a master of arts from Yale after that. He is well known for turning rooms into camera obscuras and combining landscapes with textures to create new abstract images (Wikipedia).   The first image I am choosing to talk about is this one. I am really intrigued by Morell’s work because of the way he creates installations. I think it’s interesting how he combines his camera obscuras with specific settings of rooms. I think this image is interesting because the beds in the room are juxtaposed against the view of the US capital and it really makes you stop and wonder about what message he could possibly be trying to portray through this image because its not something you would see every day. Hiroshi Sugimoto Hiroshi Sugimoto was born on February 23, 1948, in Tokyo Japan. He is a well-known photographer as well as an architect. He began photographing in high school but studied politics at Rikkyo University in Tokyo. His photographs are known as a sort of time capsule of a specific time and also focus on life and death and their relationship. (Wikipedia) The first image I am choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I really like about this image is the contrast and balance. I think it has a good balance of light and dark areas, with the white in the background and more darkness in the foreground. Another thing I really like about this image is the framing that the artist achieved. The gorilla in the right foreground is the subject and the canopy of trees along with the darker foreground frame it perfectly. The second image I am choosing to talk about is this one.   Alec Soth   Alec Soth was born in 1969 and is an American photographer. He was born in Minneapolis Minnesota. He is most well known for his “large-scale american projects” which feature the United States, and more specifically the Midwest. His work focuses on capturing people in their environments. He studied at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. (Wikipedia) The first image I am choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I really like about this photograph is the juxtaposition of the natural world and the industrialization of it as well. The mountain landscape would be a beautiful photo on its own but with the gas station plopped right in front of it, it creates a deeper meaning to audiences about the relationship between the two. I also really like the natural blue lighting of the background and how it contrasts with the fluorescent lights of the gas station. I think this carries the point across even more.
