The first image I am choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I really like about this photograph is the juxtaposition of the natural world and the industrialization of it as well. The mountain landscape would be a beautiful photo on its own but with the gas station plopped right in front of it, it creates a deeper meaning to audiences about the relationship between the two. I also really like the natural blue lighting of the background and how it contrasts with the fluorescent lights of the gas station. I think this carries the point across even more.
The other image I am choosing to talk about is this one. The first thing I noticed about this is actually how well it fits with the theme of the first image and how it echoes that idea of nature vs industrialization. I really like this image because I think it almost has an uncanny or eerie feel to it. I think the symbolism of the growth through the deserted bed frame is really spectacular. Another thing I like about this image is how simple it is. Soth is trying to show us there's really only one important thing going on, hence why there's not much going on in the background of this image.
Overall I think Soth's work is really interesting. It definitely has a different feel to it compared to other artists we've looked at and it definitely triggers different feelings. I also think I just have a lot of respect and appreciation for his work because he's photographing things that you wouldn't see every day and I think it's clear to see he really put a lot of thought into the work he produces.
