Ralph Gibson
Ralph Gibson is an American photographer who was born in Los Angeles, California. He was born in 1939. He is most well-known for his photographic books. His photos are usually a little eerie and mysterious. Gibson studied art at the San Fransisco Art Institute from 1960-1962. Before that, he was in the United States Navy (Wikipedia).
The first photo I am choosing to talk about is this one. I really enjoy the sort of eerieness of this photo. Not only is the contrast very good but the style of the photo itself is beautiful. I love how you can only see a portion of the girl’s face. I also like the intentional decision to have her eye as the only feature you can fully see. I also really like how Gibson has the shadow of someone else’s face on top of hers in the photo, covering the other half of her facial features. I just really appreciate this photo because you can tell it was well thought out and had to be precisely executed.
This is the second photo I am choosing to talk about by Ralph Gibson. I think he has a really good measure of the light in this photo. I love how the hallway is a little bit darker but the door is cracked and so a sliver of light was let in. I also think the hand reaching out is a cool concept (although it scares me). If I had to guess, he probably had to do some burning and dodging to create the effect of the lightness around the hand but I can tell that it took a good bit of time and I can definitely appreciate that about it.
Overall I feel like Gibson is a very talented photographer. I think he definitely has a theme to his photos and the feelings they produce and I really appreciate that he is able to stay consistent with that for the most part in his work.
