Barbara Kasten

Barbara Kasten was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1936, She is an american artist, but her most well-known work involves photo and video projections. She was really interested in geometrical designs and focusing on colors as well. She used mirrors, lights, and other things that bring her visions to life. She studied art at the University of Arizona before going on to grow her art education at other universities.

The first image I am choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I really like about this image is the contrasting colors. It is easy to see that Kasten is really intentional with the colors she puts in her photographs, like choosing the complementary colors of purple and yellow for this one. The color pairing just makes the image more interesting. Another thing I really appreciate about this photo is the use of the mirrors. It’s incredibly difficult for photographs to be done using a mirror just because you have to be really intentional about what shows up in your reflection and you don’t want any equipment or background to be in. She just does a really good job of setting up her props so you only see what’s in the photo.

The second photo I am choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I really like about with this one is the use of the primary colors, red, blue, and yellow. I think it makes the compositions of the photo a little more interesting to only use these and neutrals. Another thing I really like about this photo is the juxtaposition of the geometric straight-line objects and the curved objects. I think it allows for your eye to keep moving through the objects and not get stuck on one section or another. I also really like the lighting and the shadows that fall on different shapes.

Overall I really like Kastens’s work. I think the way she mixes simple objects with complex lighting and shadows and juxtapositions works really well. I also can tell she puts a lot of consideration into her work, taking into account the color, lighting, reflections, and more.
