Carolyn Drake
Carolyn Drake was born in 1971. She is an American photographer who works on long-term projects or series. She is most well-known for her work with the community and connections between people. She studied Media and Culture at Brown University in the 1990s. (Wikipedia)
The first image I am choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I really like about this image is the framing of it. The tree is in the foreground and has branches going different ways but all of the branches perfectly frame the people who are in the image. I also love this work’s documentary style because it makes you feel like you are literally there in the moment in a freeze frame of some sort.
The second image I am choosing to talk about is this one. One thing that I think is really interesting about this photograph is the lighting. Although it is at night, the scene is very well-lit. I also love how the light filters down on the subject through the smoke that is in the photograph. It creates a spotlight effect that I think is really interesting.
All in all, I really like Drake’s work. I think she does a great job of documenting people and capturing moods and feelings and you can tell she puts a lot of thought into each photograph that she takes.
