Joel Meyerowitz

 Joel Meyerowitz

Joel Meyerowitz is an American photographer who was born in 1938. He was one of the earliest supporters of color photography and advocated for it even in a time of immense pushback against it. He is most well known for his street photography, as well as his portraits and landscapes. He also taught photography later in his career at the Cooper Union located in New York City. (Wikipedia)

The first image I am choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I love about this image is the combination of different lighting included in it. Sunset is always a beautiful time to photograph and the pink clouds look cool in this photo. Additionally, I just that he included neon lights from a store. I also like how the green from the lights and roof contrast with the pink in the sky. The other thing I really like about this photo is the reflections of the lights in the cars. I think they added another compositional element that the photo would otherwise be missing.

The other photo I am choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I really like about this photograph is the blue of the background. Photographs with water usually have some sort of middle ground that separates the sky and the water but this one almost seamlessly transitions from one to the other. I also just really like the contrast of the clothes people are wearing against the blue in the photograph.

Overall I really enjoy looking at Joel Meyerowitz’s work. It’s easy to see how intentional he is with the uses of colors in his work and the contrasts and complimentaries really catch your eye in every photograph of his.
