Sebastião Salgado
Sebastiao Salgado is a Brazilian photographer who was an economist before he became a photographer. He had to make many business trips and had the desire to document them when he traveled. He produced his photos in series more often than not. He is well known for his portraits that show the economic struggles of people in their environments (International Center of Photography).
The first photo I am choosing to talk about is this one. One thing I really appreciate about this photo is the contrast. I love how the background is lighter and the subjects are darker. I also love the composition with the rule of thirds and how the biggest person is not centered because it makes the photograph more visually appealing. I also like how there is a little bit of space between the furthest one away and they create a leading line leading up to the main subject. Additionally, I think the covering of the faces creates a little bit of a mysterious feeling in the picture
The second picture I'm choosing to talk about is this one. My favorite thing about this photo is the silhouette effect of the people in the canoe. I love that they are completely darkened in the photo but they are so clear that you can still tell what they are doing. Another thing I really like about this photo is the effect of the fog on the water, and how the boats further away begin to fade into the fog. I also love how the place where the subjects are is lighter. I imagine this had to be done using burning and dodging but I love the effect it has on the image.
Overall, I love Salgado’s style and especially how he documents people in their natural environments. I also love how he incorporates the nature around them in the photos to tell more of their story and represent them better.
