ARNOLD NEWMAN

Arnold Newman was born on March 3, 1989, in New York. He studied painting and drawing in Florida but could not afford school and had to drop out with 2 years left. It was then that he moved to Philadelphia to start taking pictures. Newman was most well-known for his “environmental portraits” and still lifes. (Wikipedia)

The first picture I chose to talk about is this one. One thing I really like about this photo is the distinct contrast. Not only on the piano keys but also on the two-scale wall behind him and in his dark suit. I also really like the leading lines from the piano leading back to him and the use of the negative space on the left side of the image. I am not usually a fan of negative space but I think the middle gray works well in this image because of the heavy contrast on the right side

The other image I chose to talk about is this one. The thing I really love about this image is the repetition of the stripes over and over again. Although I feel like this could be problematic in a picture because it could be too busy, I think it works in this one because the stripes on the couch and wall are a little darker than the outfit so the subject pops a little bit more. Another thing I think is really interesting and works well for this image is the frames and decorations on the walls. I think they break up the stripes well and create more contrast for your eyes.

Overall I think Arnold Newman is a great photographer. It is easy to see how much time, effort, and planning goes into his photographs. He is intentional about everything that shows up in the picture and he shows how much he cares through his work.
