What Does Photography mean to me?

By Megan Klansek

Nowadays, you see photographs everywhere you look. Whether it's on Instagram or in advertisements, they are all around us. I can't think of a single person who doesn't enjoy looking at pictures. I think they are special for a lot of reasons, including their ability to let you look at something through a different lens (literally AND figuratively) and they allow us to capture moments.

One of the reasons photography is so special to me is it allows us to look at things in different ways. Heiferman writes in his article, “Photography challenges our assumptions and the limits of our perceptions by revealing to us what would otherwise easily go unnoticed.” I think this is one of the most beautiful things about photographs. I've taken photographs in my hometown of ordinary places and when I look at them later, I see a sort of beauty I never noticed in that place before. I think by using lighting and angles we are able to create beautiful spaces all around us and I love that.

To me specifically, more importantly, photography is special because it allows me to capture moments and hold onto them forever. I love photographing the people around me and more specifically, I love candid photographs. If I could only choose to do one style of photography for the rest of my life I think it would be documentary style. I love having the ability to capture the moments and emotions of the people in my life.

Whether I am taking sports photographs or just snapping shots on Christmas morning with my family, the joy I feel when I am able to capture a candid moment is unexplainable. That is what photography means to me. It means grabbing moments from my life and holding onto them forever.
